Google Business Profile reviews disappeared? What to do

You check your Google Business Profile and suddenly your reviews have disappeared.

Years of hard-earned feedback. Gone.

Or are they?

A missing Google review isn't necessarily a deleted Google review.

Google may remove reviews for policy reasons, reviews can be delayed while they're checked, and profile changes such as merges or reinstatements can affect when reviews appear.

But there's another particularly confusing scenario:

Your star rating and review count are still showing, but when you open the reviews, Google says "No reviews found".

We've recently encountered exactly that.

And if that's what you're seeing, don't start changing everything.

Here's how to work out what's happened, what evidence to collect and when to get Google involved.

First: what exactly has disappeared?

This is the quickest way to narrow the problem down.

Your review count is still showing, but the reviews aren't

For example: 5.0 ★ (20 reviews)

But when you click through: No reviews found

That's an important clue.

Google is still displaying a rating and recognising 20 reviews, despite not showing the individual reviews themselves.

It doesn't guarantee they'll return, but it suggests this may be a display, processing or synchronisation issue rather than all 20 reviews simply having been permanently deleted.

This is the exact situation we recently encountered with an estate agency Business Profile.

Your review count has actually dropped

This is different.

Perhaps you had 120 reviews yesterday and now have 116.

Possible explanations include:

Google removing reviews for policy reasons
Reviews being caught by Google's moderation systems
A reviewer deleting their review
Changes involving merged Business Profiles
Reviews still being processed

Google confirms that reviews are checked against its policies and that this can sometimes delay them by a few days.

It also states that reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored.

So before doing anything else, record whether the number itself has changed.

That's your first diagnostic clue.

Why do Google Business Profile reviews disappear?

There isn't one answer.

Google's current guidance identifies several situations that can affect reviews, including:

Reviews being checked against Google's policies
Reviews being removed for policy violations
Delays following a Business Profile merge
Reviews disappearing following some profile reinstatements
Google temporarily disabling user-generated content for particular profiles or categories

There can also be situations where the profile itself appears to be undergoing processing following significant changes.

The important thing is not to diagnose every missing review as a "Google bug".

Start with the symptoms. Then look at what changed.

Google still shows my review count, but no reviews appear

This is the strange one.

We recently came across a Business Profile displaying:

5.0 stars
20 reviews

The business information and newly displayed physical address were showing correctly.

But clicking the reviews returned: No reviews found.

The 20 reviews hadn't disappeared from the number Google displayed. The individual reviews had simply stopped appearing.

The timing was particularly interesting.

A significant address setting had been changed roughly 24 hours earlier.

Our working diagnosis was that Google was reprocessing the Business Profile and that the reviews had temporarily fallen out of sync with what was being displayed publicly.

Notice the wording there:

Google doesn't officially document "change your address and your reviews disappear" as a rule, and we wouldn't pretend otherwise.

What we had was a very specific set of symptoms, a clear timeline and other reports of reviews becoming unavailable around significant profile changes, reverification and reinstatement.

That's enough to investigate.

It isn't enough to invent a new Google rule.

Google reviews disappeared after changing your business address

If you've searched specifically for this because it has just happened to you, the first thing we'd recommend is:

Don't immediately change the address back.

Changing an address is a meaningful Business Profile edit.

Google may need to process updated business information, and certain changes can result in a business needing to verify again.

What Google does not say is that changing your address automatically deletes your reviews.

So if your reviews disappear shortly after an address change:

Record your current rating and review count
Take screenshots
Check whether the individual reviews are unavailable or the actual count has fallen
Check your Business Profile for verification requests or warnings
Record your Place ID and Business Profile ID
Avoid making further major changes while you're diagnosing the problem

The timing of the address change may be relevant.

But correlation isn't automatically causation, especially where Google is concerned.

Should an estate agent display its address on Google?

If you operate from a genuine office where customers can visit you during your stated opening hours, displaying your physical location may be appropriate.

But eligibility matters.

Google distinguishes between:

Storefront businesses, where customers visit the business location.

Service-area businesses, which visit or deliver to customers but don't serve customers at their address.

Hybrid businesses, which serve customers at their premises and also travel or deliver to customers.

Google says businesses that don't serve customers at their address should remove the address from their Business Profile and use a service area instead.

So don't display a virtual, fake or otherwise ineligible address because somebody told you it was an SEO trick.

For estate agents with legitimate staffed offices, your location is an important part of your wider local-search presence, but showing an address doesn't guarantee better rankings.

Reviews disappeared after verification, reverification or reinstatement

Again, don't automatically assume they're permanently gone.

Google specifically acknowledges that reviews can sometimes disappear after a Business Profile has been reinstated and tells affected businesses to contact support.

If your profile was recently:

Verified
Reverified
Reinstated following suspension
Updated with significant business information

make a note of the dates.

A simple timeline can become very useful:

12 August: address changed
13 August: new address visible
13 August: review count remains at 20 but individual reviews unavailable
16 August: reviews still unavailable

That's much more useful to Google Support than:

"My reviews have vanished. Please fix them."

Could my reviews be attached to another Google listing?

Potentially.

Duplicate profiles, business moves and profile merges can complicate things.

Google says that following a Business Profile merge, reviews from the profiles can take a few days to display on Search and Maps.

This is one reason we'd recommend recording your Google Place ID, particularly before making significant location changes.

What is a Google Place ID?

A Place ID is an identifier Google uses for places within Google Maps and its Places database.

Your business has one.

Google provides an official Place ID Finder that allows you to search for a business and retrieve it.

Why bother recording it?

Because the visible details around a business can change.

Names can change. Addresses can change. Listings can be merged or updated.

Having the Place ID recorded gives you another useful reference when trying to establish what has happened to a particular Google Maps entity.

It's not infallible. Google itself says Place IDs can change over time and recommends refreshing stored IDs that are more than 12 months old.

But as part of a troubleshooting record, it's extremely useful.

Our advice from now on

Before making a significant Google Business Profile location change, record:

Current star rating
Current review count
Google Place ID
Business Profile ID
Screenshots of the public listing
Current address/service-area configuration

Five minutes of preparation can make troubleshooting considerably easier if something unexpected happens afterwards.

What to do if your Google reviews disappear

Here's the process we'd follow.

1. Look at your public Google listing

Search for the business normally and check what a customer can actually see.

Record:

Star rating
Review count
Whether reviews open
Business name
Address or service area
Website
Telephone number

Take screenshots.

2. Check your Business Profile

Make sure:

The profile is verified
Google isn't requesting reverification
There are no suspension or restriction warnings
Recent edits have been accepted
The business details are correct

3. Record your IDs

Keep a copy of:

Google Place ID
Business Profile ID

These can help identify the correct profile when dealing with Google Support.

4. Think about what changed

Ask yourself:

Did we change our address?
Did we make the address visible or hidden?
Did we move premises?
Did Google ask us to verify again?
Was the profile recently reinstated?
Did we change the business name?
Were duplicate profiles merged?
Did we make several major changes at once?

Record the dates.

5. Don't keep changing things

This is the bit we'd underline twice.

Don't panic-edit your Business Profile.

Avoid repeatedly:

Changing the address
Hiding and unhiding the address
Changing the business name
Changing categories without good reason
Creating replacement profiles
Creating another Maps listing
Attempting unnecessary merges

Every additional change introduces another variable.

And when you're troubleshooting something, fewer variables are your friend.

How long should I wait for missing Google reviews?

There isn't a universal Google timeframe for every missing-review scenario.

Google says reviews being checked against its policies can sometimes take a few days to appear.

It also says reviews following Business Profile merges can take a few days to display.

Separately, Google says approved service-area edits can take up to 48 hours to appear.

Where we've seen the specific scenario of the review count remaining intact while the individual reviews disappear immediately following a significant profile change, our practical recommendation is to allow around 48–72 hours before assuming the reviews have permanently disappeared, provided there are no other warnings or problems with the profile.

That's our troubleshooting advice.

It isn't a Google-guaranteed recovery time.

And while you're waiting, resist the temptation to keep fiddling with the profile.

Sometimes the most useful action is giving Google time to finish whatever Google is doing.

When should I contact Google?

If your reviews remain missing after a reasonable processing period, or there's evidence of a bigger profile problem, contact Google Business Profile Support.

We'd escalate sooner if:

Your profile has been suspended
Google is requesting verification you can't complete
Your review count has changed dramatically
Reviews disappeared following reinstatement
You appear to have a duplicate or merged-profile problem
Business information is displaying against the wrong listing
The problem isn't resolving after you've allowed time for recent changes to process

Make their job easier.

Provide:

Business name
Business Profile ID
Google Place ID
Current review count
Previous review count, if different
Screenshots showing the problem
Approximate date the reviews disappeared
Any significant profile changes immediately beforehand
Details of recent verification or reverification
Details of any recent suspension or reinstatement
Information about any duplicate or merged profiles

Keep it factual.

You're trying to give Google a clean before-and-after picture of what happened.

What NOT to do when your Google reviews disappear

This deserves repeating because it's where a manageable problem can become messy.

Don't:

Immediately reverse your address change
Make repeated profile edits
Create a replacement Business Profile
Create duplicate Maps listings
Change your business name unnecessarily
Start merging profiles unless you know there's genuinely a duplicate
Assume every missing review has been deleted
Assume every missing review is Google's fault either

Diagnose first.

Change things second.

Can missing Google reviews come back?

Yes, depending on why they're missing.

A review that's delayed while being checked may subsequently appear.

Reviews involved in a Business Profile merge may take a few days to display.

Google also acknowledges that reviews can sometimes disappear after reinstatement and advises businesses to contact support in that situation.

Reviews removed for policy violations are different. Google says those won't be restored.

So the answer isn't simply yes or no.

It comes back to the question we started with:

Our recent experience has changed one thing in the advice we'll give going forward.

Before a significant Business Profile location or address change:

Screenshot the profile
Record the star rating
Record the review count
Record the Google Place ID
Record the Business Profile ID
Confirm the address is eligible under Google's guidelines
Check you have the correct owner/admin access
Avoid combining the change with lots of unrelated edits
Monitor the profile afterwards

Hopefully nothing unusual happens.

If it does, you've got a before-and-after audit trail rather than relying on memory.

That's a much better place to start.
